Another piece of good news for transportation construction in Tamsui! On October 28, the Urban Planning Committee of the Ministry of the Interior approved the "Amendment to the Tamsui Urban Plan (to coordinate with the second phase of the Tamsui Light Rail Transit System)". The second phase of the Tamsui Light Rail will extend from the Tamsui MRT Station to Fisherman's Wharf Station, injecting new momentum into the transportation and tourism of the Tamsui area. The New Taipei City Government will subsequently hold a public exhibition and briefing in accordance with the resolution and continue the urban plan approval process.

The New Taipei City Government stated that the Danhai Light Rail, with its core focus on creating a green, low-carbon, and convenient transportation system, has become a vital artery for the commuting and leisure activities of residents in the Danhai New Town since its opening. With the rapid population growth and expansion of the new town's living area, the existing road network is gradually becoming saturated. To meet transportation demands and local public opinion, the city government is actively promoting a second phase of extension plans.
The second phase of the Danshui Light Rail will connect with the first phase of the Blue Ocean Line and, in line with the local demand that "the light rail will not enter Danshui Old Street," the route will extend from Zhongzheng Road Old Street to Guanchao Square before turning into the riverside area, with a total length of approximately 3.32 kilometers and 6 at-grade stations. Upon completion, it will not only connect tourist attractions along the Danshui River but also stimulate the development of commercial districts along the line, strengthening the integration of low-carbon transportation with the urban landscape.

The Urban and Rural Development Bureau pointed out that the approved plan not only improves right-of-way design but also strengthens the integration of pedestrian safety facilities and transfer systems, while simultaneously optimizing road widening and pedestrian flow to enhance traffic efficiency and the quality of pedestrian spaces. Furthermore, adjustments have been made to the allocation of land for some public facilities to improve service efficiency, thus making the overall plan more comprehensive.
The New Taipei City Government explained that the project, from its public exhibition on May 19, 2023, to its approval by the Urban Planning Committee, took only nine months. Now, it has been approved by the Ministry of the Interior's Urban Planning Committee, demonstrating the city government's strong commitment to promoting the "Three Rings and Six Lines MRT Network." Once the second phase of the Danhai Light Rail is operational, it will form a ring road network with the Danbei Road and the Danjiang Bridge, offering both tourism accessibility and commuting efficiency. This will help alleviate traffic congestion in the Danshui area and promote the overall development of the North Coast.

The city government emphasized that it will continue to promote the expansion of the MRT network in the future to achieve seamless integration with the Greater Taipei metropolitan area, improve the quality of life for residents, and move towards sustainable urban development.
