香港政府為推動綠色運輸，落實《香港氣候行動藍圖2050》的減碳目標，斥資3.5億全額資助渡輪營辦商建造四艘電動渡輪及相關配套設施，第一艘電動渡輪「新明珠39」已於去年12月底投入服務，率先在新渡輪航線試行。現已進入第二階段載客測試，並已於今年3月31日起逐步增加載客班次，預計每周載客日數將增至3天。
